In the beginning you can choose 1 of 7 characters to play. All of the sprites are hard painted, the combat system is unique and engaging, as is the entire game. This game is my favorite RPG, and in my opinion the best out there. If you can find this game for $10, it would be worth the buy just to experience it, but it certainly isn't worth much more than that. I did find myself wanting to beat the game as quickly as I could through 2 of the 7 scenarios, so it felt like I got my money's worth before moving on to a better game. The game requires quite a bit of grinding, but I didn't find myself minding to do it.

Battling is basically everything in Saga Frontier, and it is at least fun to do. Sometimes you had to luckily, blindly stumble upon the exit to figure out where you have to go. It was confusing to locate the multiple exits on any given screen. The pre-rendered backgrounds were nothing special. Music and graphics wise, the gam e is pretty weak. The trouble is, there's hardly any story! I played through as Blue first, and there's literally maybe one or two paragraphs of story driven dialogue the entire game!!! I was shocked! Emelia had a more engaging plot, but it was still very, very weak. The premise seemed amazing, with 7 different characters, each with their own story. This is what I was hoping for when I bought Saga Frontier. Even other companies produced wonderful RPGs with great stories like Legend of Dragoon. I had been used to the Final Fantasy series, and others like Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Unique gameplay, epic quests, immersing stories. This era seemed to be their golden age when it came to RPGs. I had high expectations for an RPG by Squaresoft from 1998. Disappointing RPG for those that enjoy immersing storylines.
